Compass Minerals Provides Support to Water Quality Education Program
Compass Minerals donated $12,000 to a unique school-based water quality education curriculum, T.R.U.E. Blue (Teaching Rivers in an Urban Environment), a program established and facilitated by Blue River Watershed Association (BRWA).
T.R.U.E Blue is a hands-on, four-day educational program that teaches middle and high school students about the water cycle, storm water runoff, the importance of clean water as a natural resource and the impacts people have in an urban environment. The program is offered to students in grades 6-12 in the Kansas City-metro area.
“It costs approximately $600 for one class of students to participate in this program,” said Lynn Youngblood, BRWA executive director. “With Compass Minerals’ generous contribution we will be able to support 20 classes and reach 500 students, a surprising number of whom have never actually visited a river environment.”
Compass Minerals is focused on giving back by supporting local, national and global organizations that align with the company’s Core Purpose of helping to keep people safe, feeding the world and enriching lives. Specifically the company focuses its corporate giving program on human services, environment, health and education, which supports the company’s broader sustainability commitments.
“We are honored to support a local organization that focuses on STEM education in the urban area,” said Fran Malecha, Compass Minerals president and CEO. “We are especially pleased to support an organization with such a strong environmental education component.”
“Compass Minerals’ strong commitment to enriching lives through responsible transformation of natural resources aligns seamlessly with the mission and goals of BRWA in education and protecting Kansas City watersheds,” said BRWA board president, Dr. Micheal Strohschein.
