Our Commitment to the Great Lakes Ecosystem
Compass Minerals has fulfilled a $60,000 pledge to The Nature Conservancy in support of a two-year commitment, with $30,000 of the donation dedicated to its Our Michigan campaign. As our business relies heavily on the Great Lakes ecosystem, helping preserve it aligns with our commitment to the responsible transformation and stewardship of the earth’s natural resources.
Aimed at helping to ensure the long-term vitality of the Great Lakes ecosystem, The Nature Conservancy developed the Our Michigan campaign to focus on a robust science and policy agenda to protect and restore the waterways, coastlines and forests of the Great Lakes ecosystem.
Reaching their present shapes and sizes more than 3,000 years ago, the Great Lakes ecosystem contains a variety of habitats and supports over 3,500 species of plants and animals. In addition, a big part of this ecosystem is commercial, sport and industry. More than 230 million tons of cargo pass through its waters each year – including our own salt.
“We recognize the importance of investing in the maintenance and care of the Great Lakes ecosystem,” said Jill Westra, Director of Corporate Environment and Sustainability. “Four of the five Great Lakes are home to a Compass Minerals site, and it’s because of this and the important role the Great Lakes play in the transportation of our salt products that we’re happy to be able to support The Nature Conservancy in its efforts to preserve this ecosystem.”
